What is “Onboarding for Life”

Never heard of onboarding? Well, we do it every day. Onboarding is made up of all the activities we do and the decisions we make whenever we interact with another human being. Often we’re not even aware of these activities and decisions – we just react to the other person or persons.

Successful onboarding leads to:

  • Stronger relationships (which can lead to anything from more clients and prospects to getting promoted and building more successful careers)
  • Personal connections
  • More referrals
  • Increased sales
  • Measurable success
  • Lasting impressions

The first time you became conscious of the onboarding process was probably when you entered kindergarten. You were the new kid and wanted to get to know the other kids, figure out what the rules were, and become part of the culture. If it went well, you probably had a good experience and repeated this process successfully when you were in new situations.

If it didn’t go well, you probably had a miserable time. Maybe you didn’t make friends, you found it hard to follow the rules, or you hated having to sit and be quiet. Whatever the case, the next time you encountered a new group of kids in a new setting, you were apprehensive, afraid that history would repeat itself.

We didn’t realize it at the age of four or five, but that was onboarding, and we go through it every time we change schools, neighborhoods, teams, jobs, functions, companies, etc.

Onboarding happens throughout your entire life. Every time you meet someone new, you’re onboarding with that person. Onboarding is critical to business and essential to life. It’s all about how easily and well you connect with others.

And that’s where we come in. At The Balanced WorkLife Company we are all about giving you access to the principles, tools and techniques that, when applied, ensure that each onboarding opportunity you experience is the best it can possibly be and contributes to your overall success in life.

We believe that OnBoarding is a never-ending process that we experience throughout our life. In order to master this process and achieve your ultimate potential, you must understand, plan and prepare for the steps involved.

There are four basic principles or pillars that create the structure for OnBoarding for Life.

First, you must Master Your Uniqueness.

  • This involves discovering what your exceptional talents are. What are the things that you are extraordinarily good at and that you love to do?
  • Then you must learn the strategies that allow you to work in your talent zone where you can be most effective and happy.
  • Next you must build a team around you whose exceptional talents can support you in those tasks and activities that are outside your talent zone.
  • And finally, you will learn how to align the team’s talent with the roles needed to be productive.

Second, you must Define The Unstoppable You.

  • This principle involves discovering and planning for the Dimensions of your life: business, career, and personal.
  • Then you will Exercise Your Goal Setting Muscle by setting goals for each of the Dimensions. This will define your future.
  • Next you will learn how to develop and maintain Unstoppable Confidence to power you through the inevitable barriers and blockages that crop up while you pursue your goals.
  • And then, you will prepare yourself for the quantum leaps that are needed to reach your pinnacle, the apex of your ultimate potential.

Third, you must gain the skills that will allow you to Accelerate with Power.

This principle is based on our belief that if you are going to reach your full potential and have a balanced life, there are four critical skills you need to acquire and master.

  • The first of these skills is Value Added Networking with Purpose. This involves learning how to fill your network with the people who can help you achieve your goals and how to create value for them long before you expect anything from them.
  • The second skill is Mastering Your Time. If you want the next job you need to be able to handle the operational aspects of your current job in about 30 hours a week (we call this Success@30TM) so that you have the rest of the time to invest in strategic endeavors that can make a difference to the organization.
  • The third skill to master is Creating Powerful Results through others. This skill involves learning how to delegate effectively and how to set performance expectations for your team.
  • The fourth skill is learning how to make powerful connections with others through understanding communication styles and adapting your style to theirs.

The fourth and final pillar involves Leveraging Your Leadership.

This principle is based on our belief that for you to attain your ultimate potential you will need to make quantum leaps. There simply isn’t enough time to get from the bottom to the top of whatever career you have chosen if you approach it in a linear fashion. You must be able to take more than one step at a time.

  • To make quantum leaps you need to know how to Accelerate Your Teams to higher productivity, faster.
  • You will need to Integrate Systems into your management in order to efficiently stay on top of and in fact, ahead of the metrics, information flow and communications.
  • The key people in your team must be able to work together effectively; toxic relationships in a team lead to increased stress and lost productivity and opportunity. This means you must be able to identify and then intervene with the appropriate tools and process to neutralize the toxicity and keep the team productive.
  • Finally, you must be able to facilitate alliances so that you accelerate the effectiveness of the external/independent entity stakeholders where the success of the relationship dramatically affects the success of the organization.
