Do You Possess the Wisdom of Owls?
We have been blessed by the appearance of three owls at The Retreat. It has been hotter than the hinges of Hades for the past couple of weeks and as near as I can tell it’s just been too hot for the owls to roost in the trees with the daytime temperature sitting over 110F. These are hard times for the owls and even owls have to adapt.
So, the mom, dad and single chick have taken to coming to The Retreat around 10:00 in the morning and sitting on the grass in the shade of the large pines. They fluff out their wings to expose their bellies to the cool grass and spend the rest of the day moving with the sun to stay in the shade. Come evening, they fly off in search of dinner.
They are taking seriously higher risks, especially with their chick, by sitting on the ground completely exposed to me, Lori, the dog and the staff and clients walking back and forth to the office. They have to stay awake all day in order to be vigilant because they are now vulnerable to a coyote or a cat, both of which could pounce on them from the fence. But they are willing to take that risk in order to simply survive in the heat.
We can learn from these magnificent creatures. Sometimes we have to significantly increase our risk in order to thrive.
We can learn from these magnificent creatures. Sometimes we have to significantly increase our risk in order to thrive. We have to do things that are outside of our comfort zone. We have to risk failure or rejection. We have to go out on a limb.
These are tough times for pretty much everyone … to survive, and even thrive, in them, we all have to take more risks.
Readers: What risks are you taking to weather these times?
