Onboarding Defined

This is our first blog post so I’ll start by telling you what “OnBoarding For Life” is about and what you can expect from us as we develop our following.
After a combined total of almost 50 years in big “C” corporate life and positions ranging from sales to sales management to consulting practice leader, my partner Jim and I have observed the following:
Everyone, every day is being OnBoarded.
Think about what onboarding is.
OnBoarding can be defined as the process of acquiring, accommodating, assimilating and accelerating new users into a system, culture or methodology. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
Taken personally, we believe that every day, everyone is in the process of being acquired, accommodated, and assimilated into a system, culture or methodology.
On your first day of school, you were onboarded. When you were picked for the football or basketball team, you were onboarded. When you got your first job, you were onboarded. And, when you moved into your first house, you were onboarded into the neighborhood.
How successful you were in each of these arenas, whether you thrived or merely survived, was a function of four basic abilities:
- Your ability to set goals and make progress toward achieving them.
- Your ability to acquire and practice fundamental thriving skills.
- Your ability know, understand and build on your strengths, and
- Your ability to work with and leverage the strengths of others.
We believe that mastering these four areas is what will allow you to achieve your ultimate potential. To be all you can be. And, to have a fulfilling career and personal life while you do it.
We plan to write about each of these four areas specifically as they apply to working in a mid-sized to large organization.
We will both be posting on the blog. We’re aiming for two posts a week. We’ll see how that goes.
We’re looking for feedback so please, if you like or don’t like what we say; how we say it, or whatever, give us feedback. We promise to acknowledge it and then get better.
