7 Personal Growth Activities to Do When You’re “Snowed In”

As I was reading the thousands of feeds on twitter this week, one topic was on most people’s minds. SNOW.

This week was somewhat of an enigma. Every state had snow fall except Florida, and 71% of the U.S. was covered in white precipitation.  Just yesterday, there were reports of 8 to 38 inches of snow fall in the New England region alone.

This left many people wondering what to do?

In response we want to share a few personal growth activities anyone can do, whether they are snowed in or stuck in the house for any reason.

1.  Read a Good Book

During our regular day to day lives we often use the excuse that we’re too busy to really sit down and read.  Nothing may be more inviting and cozy on a cold winter day than warming up with a good book to read.  What’s especially nice about the time we live in, is that downloading books online is cheap and easier than ever.   So no more excuses if you’ve read every book in the house.

2.  Learn a Skill

There are a surprising number of life skills you can learn all from the comfort of your own home.  Want to be a better cook, learn to sew, improve on playing an instrument, or grasp a new language?  These are just some examples, but the point is you can learn the basics of almost anything online now.

If you need help finding some good sites to visit and learn from try out;

3.  Write Something

There are several benefits to writing.  It can be therapeutic, clear the mind, and strengthen your communication skills.  Several people even make residual income by writing for syndicated sites as freelancers.

If you have an area you are an expert, write about it.  If your resume is collecting dust, spruce it up.  If you are trying to learn more about a subject, write some more.

4.  Keep or Start a Journal

It has been a joy to look back at some of the past experiences I’ve had, and see how my younger self viewed them.  At the moment you are writing a journal entry, it probably feels a little mundane, insignificant, or business as usual.  However, looking back at some of the entries of my journals I’ve really learned a lot about myself, thought processes, and goals.

Whether you have a journal you write regularly in; or decide to start one today, keeping a record of your personal growth will truly reward you for generations.

5.  Clean the House

When you are stuck inside the house, you might as well make it enjoyable to look at.  Everyone is different in the amount of “mess” they are able to tolerate before it drives them nuts, but cleanliness does have its rewards.

Studies show that cleanliness helps with learning, maintaining your health, presenting a good self image, and more.

6.  Spend Quality Time w/ Family

For many families, it is rare for circumstances to come up that allow them to have more time together.  It would be a shame, to see it spent with the kids on video games, Dad at his desk, and Mom picking up the house.

Make an effort to do something enjoyable together.  Pull out a board game, make an igloo, go sledding.  Make some memories!

7.  Create Something

If you are like me, there is always a project to be worked on.  Use this time to create something of value or interest.  You can put together a bookshelf, desk, jewelery,  or other item you’ve been putting off.   Or you can make something intangible like a blog, ebook, or digital photo album.

When the snow clears and you go outside to your regular routine, you can look back and really say you accomplished something significant.

I wrote about a topic similar to this on my blog. Most people don’t have an action plan in place to handle when they are snowed. Most will do something unproductive like watch T.V. or go to their favorite social networking site.
